So I'm pretty sure a lot of people know about the hashtag save the turtles. We see that we have flooded our ocean with plastic one being plastic straws which has been affecting our see turtles which would end up getting stuck in places, such as their nose, leaving it impossible for them to remove themselves. Sea turtles are a greatly liked Marine animal amongst many people on social media.

Recently a video of some Marine biologist pulling a straw out of a sea turtles nose has been going around and spread across social media. This has caused people to start a movement called #SAVETHETURTLES and has made many people aware of their plastic use and what they doing to our marine life. People were even able to make money off of people by selling reusable straws. People on social media are now posting all of over their feed their new reusable straw to show that they are helping with "saving" the turtles.

We see how media can help bring a positive affect on our earth. Where it brings more people aware of our problems as a society. And can actually help benefit us in the future. But also media can be used to advertise products and gather up a big group of people to spend money when they don't really need too. :/

  1. I like how you added that the hashtag is not only promoting awareness but also allowing companies to get more business. However, I think that it is good that these companies are being supported by customers. It is taking away customers from plastic straw companies and moving them towards more eco-friendly companies. To really make a change it might take a hashtag on social media.

  2. Exactly. People need to realize that for-profit doesn't mean it's only bad, because not many things are only bad. However, it's still a formidable force to be reckoned with that can be used for or against you. It's strange how the seemingly most random things become "viral," simply because of how flawed technology is.

Do you think that once we get perfectly accurate and personalized "narrowcasting" for every user, nothing will become viral anymore?

  3. This is a great example of how media can help bring awareness to current issues. With the help of social media, people are being exposed to the importance of recycling and cutting back on plastic. I think it is sad that our ocean life is suffering from our (human) choices to not keep our planet clean. Switching to reusable straws will and has helped tremendously I think, but what other things do you think would be a good way to help #savetheturtles?
